BIOGRAPHY

Alberto Hernández holds a BS on Telecommunications Engineering by the ETSIT (Senior Technical School of Telecommunication Engineering) of the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM) and is a certified Security Director by the Spanish Ministry of Interior. He has been part of INCIBE’s team since February 2014, first as Chief Operations Officer (COO), and currently as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) since 2016.

As INCIBE’s Chief Operations Officer he has been accountable for the implementation of the area in charge of services, technologies and activities focused on the industry, as well as a department for R+D+I and talent development. He has been cooperating with the Organization of American States (OAS) as an international expert in missions for the development of national cybersecurity strategies in several Latin-American countries.

In his career previous to INCIBE, Alberto Hernández was Chief of the Cyberdefence Area of ISDEFE (Engineering Systems for the Defence of Spain), being part of the team who designed and implemented the Joint Command for Cyberdefence of the Spanish Armed Forces.

BIOGRAPHY

Pedro Larranaga is Full Professor in Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence at the Technical University of Madrid (UPM) since 2007. He received the MSc degree in mathematics (statistics) from the University of Valladolid and the PhD degree in computer science from the University of the Basque Country (“excellence award”). Before moving to UPM, his academic career has been developed at the University of the Basque Country (UPV-EHU) at several faculty ranks: Assistant Professor (1985-1998), Associate Professor (1998-2004) and Full Professor (2004-2007). He earned the habilitation qualification for Full Professor in 2003.

His research interests are primarily in the areas of probabilistic graphical models, metaheuristics for optimization, data mining, classification models, and real applications, like biomedicine, bioinformatics, neuroscience, industry 4.0 and sports. He has published more than 200 papers in impact factor journals and has supervised 31 PhD theses. He is fellow of the European Association for Artificial Intelligence since 2012 and fellow of the Academia Europaea since 2018. He has been awarded the 2013 Spanish National Prize in Computer Science and the prize of the Spanish Association for Artificial Intelligence in 2018.

Dr. André Carlos Ponce de Leon Ferreira de Carvalho

BIOGRAPHY

Full Professor at the Department of Computer Science, Institute of Mathematical and Computer Sciences, University of São Paulo (ICMC-USP), Campus São Carlos and Research Productivity Fellow 1A at CNPq. He holds a Bachelor’s degree (1987) and a Master’s Degree in Computer Science (1990) from the Federal University of Pernambuco, and a PhD in Electronic Engineering from the University of Kent (1994). His main research interests are Machine Learning, Data Mining and Data Science, with applications in various areas. Author of several books, including Inteligência Artificial: Uma abordagem de Aprendizado de Máquina, published by GrupoGen in 2011 and Jabuti Award in 2012, and A General Introduction to Data Analytics, published by Wiley, in 2018. He evaluates projects for national research funding agencies, CAPES, CNPq, FAPESP, FACEPE, FAPEMIG and Fundação Serrapilheira, and international, NSERC (Canada), The Leverhulme Trust (UK), EPSRC UK), GACR (Czech Republic), CONICYT (Chile) and MIUR (Italy). He is deputy director of ICMC-USP and the Center for Applied Mathematical Sciences for Industry at USP. He is a member of the Computer Science Advisory Committee (CA-CC), of the Science for Education Network (CpE), the International Network for Government Science Advice (INGSA), of the Technical Scientific Council of the School of Applied Mathematics of the Getúlio Vargas Foundation (EMAp-FGV), of the University Council of the Universidade de São Paulo, of the Advanced Institute for Artificial Intelligence (AI2) and Member of the Strategy and Partnerships Board of the UKRI Centre for Doctoral Training in Accountable, Responsible and Transparent AI (ART-AI), at University of Bath, UK. He is Vice-President elected of the Brazilain Computer Society, Sociedade Brasileira de Computação (SBC). Once a month he writes about Artificial Intelligence on the Science & Mathematics Blog, IMPA and OGlobo.
